If you give your new puppy a good start in life, you will reap the benefit for years to come. Puppies go through important development periods in their first few months, including a socialisation period which ends at around 14 weeks of age. If your puppy does not learn how to get along with both people and other dogs during these crucial weeks it may have problems socialising for the rest of its life.
We can help! The Veterinary Surgery runs regular puppy school courses. These courses are ran by our qualified dog trainer, Daniela Sandmann and are designed to help your puppy achieve the socialisation it needs to become a well-balanced adult dog. As well as enabling interaction between people and dogs, we also start basic positive-reinforcement training, work at preventing and solving common behavioural problems and discuss ways to ensure your puppy stays healthy. As well as being informative, these classes are fun!
Puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age, of any breed, are welcome to join the course which consists of five weekly hour-long sessions. Total cost for the course is $120. All you need to bring is your new puppy, a lead, a favourite toy and plenty of (small) treats. Children are welcome to attend. Please note that puppies do not require their second vaccination prior to joining the class – the younger your puppy is, the more it will benefit.
